Ok, so my husband and I have never seen the Godfather movies. Sad, I know. He's nursing a herniated disc so we finally have some downtime.

Anyway, in Part 1, what does "go to the mattresses" mean? I think it means something down the lines of do what you have to do to get the job done, stand up for yourself and defend your honor, etc.

Where does that saying come from though? We are only on Part II right now. Does it get explained in a later part?

Being Italian here and a lover of Mafia type books and movies, maybe I can help . When there were turf wars among Italian Mafioso gangs for control of certain so called legitamate businesses , many top leaders were assassinated . The assassinations usually took place quickly and just over a period of hours or at least with in 24 hours time . The gang that did the assassinations then went into hiding for a period of time . In other words , they "went to the mattresses" and hid out somewhere as a group . Usually at a secret house or apartment . Extra mattresses were brought in so everyone in the gang had a place to sleep on during this hiding time until things cooled down . The cops would be looking for them after the murders and so would the gang that had their members killed off . The hiding out period could be days or weeks . Food was brought in , and drink, and naturally cards to kill the time . Usually an agreement was hammered out at a secret meeting between the two waring gangs . All returned to normal after that all happened and the gang members could now go out in public and do their daily thing and get back to their familes . Hope that cleared things up for you. Take care, Tony

The Godfather trilogy has been mystified so much just to get people to buy the enhanced versions. They're just 30 yr old movies. They're not deep, they're good, but there's no hidden messages or stuff to be learned from them. They were just movies in the 1970's and they're just movies now. What can you learn from Lord of the Rings or the Matrix trilogies? Same thing. Enjoy Godfather II, it's the only one worth watching more than a couple times.

"Go to the matresses" is an old mafia slang term for preparing for a gang war. It comes from the fact that, in the old days, when there was going to be a war between mafia families, the gangsters would leave their homes, so their wives, mistresses and kids wouldn't get caught in the crossfire.

They would rent apartments to serve as safehouses. They wouldn't bother with any furniture, they would only have matresses so the guys would have something to sleep on.

That's why they call preparing for a mob war "going to the matresses".

Going to the mattresses means basically, renting an apartment and filling it with mattresses for your mafia soldiers to sleep on.

Its a reference to a safe-house from ambushes in a Mafia War.
