My favorite Western is Clint Eastwood's "The Unforgiven". It's a must see, even if you're not all that fond of westerns. Shenandoah with Jimmy Stewart is another must see. Not exactly a western, it's set in the Civil War period and concerns a father's attempts to keep his sons out of a war he doesn't believe in. Enemy Mine is my favorite SF movie. Lou Gossett plays the alien. It's about a war in space between humans and a mysterious race called the Draks. A dogfight causes a human and a Drak to crash land on an uninhabited planet, and they're forced to cooperate in order to survive. Forbidden Planet is my second SF favorite. It's a bit dated now, but it's still a nail-biter even after all these years. Like Alfred Hitchcock, what you don't see is sometimes scarier than what you do. Speaking of Hitchcock, you should see Rear Window, if you haven't already. It's another Jimmy Stewart picture, and Raymond Burr (Perry Mason and Ironside) plays the killer. It'll keep you on edge, as the Hitch always does. As for war pictures, Full Metal Jacket is the best depictation of Marine Corps bootcamp I've ever seen, and the only movie I know of that shows the Vietnam War from a Marine's perspective. In reality, the profanity was worse, and the calculated brutality of it was worse, but I guess if they showed what it was REALLY like, nobody would watch it. But my favorite war movie was another Vietnam flick, Apocalypse Now. Marlon Brando plays the renegade Colonel and Martin Sheen plays the Lieutenant sent to kill him. Yes, we sometimes killed our own guys back then. Vietnam was ****** up! But you know what they say about those who cannot remember the past being condemned to repeat it. The Big Chill is another must see, but then that one got to me personally. I'm an old 60's radical myself, and some of my friends never adjusted to the Reagan Era. Others just sold out, like most of the people in this flick. Houdini, staring Tony Curtis is another of my favorites, and it's actually a fairly accurate depictation of the life of the world's most famous magician, which was unusual for the Hollywood of the time. Oh, I could go on forever, but that will get you started!
