The 80's were the start of the Information age when computers and electronics were really becoming widespread. Time Magazine selected The Computer as the "Man of the Year" in 1982. That sense of a new technological age was expressed in popular culture, in everything from the explosion in science fiction movies and television, to video gaming and music.
It's also when music videos first became widespread (MTV launched in 1981), and shiny costumes, wild hair, and electronic special effects were still fresh and new.

I have been alive during 6 decades. I did not like the 80"s. The clothes were UGLY, the dancing was stupid, the music stank, can't even remember any good movies from then, bad hair-do's, nobody did anything memorable or to change the world. Must have been the lull between very cool past and awesome present/future. Everybody wanted to be rich and live like movie starts and millionaires during then. They weren't but, they tried to be that way. Then they all learned that that is not where true happiness lies. That's why people are so much spiritual now.

It probably has something to do with early CGI. People wanted to play.
Beyond that the 80s were a time of looking forward anyway. The past was the 60s, which was our parents generation, and the 70s which were better forgotten.

I think it was because people realized that 2000 was right around the corner and they saw that number as something technological and futuristic and they wanted to be ready for it.

Techno, man. The 80s saw the rise of techno into pop culture because of widespread use of the synthesizer. Techno is popularly portrayed in most old and new Sci-Fi movies, so I guess American culture just caught on.

The Micro Chip did more than open
people's eyes.
It opened their minds.
Suddenly, possibilities were endless.
Everything began to change fast, from
music to home additions such as the
computer.
Sadly enough. cars still run on gas
and oil, basically.
