don't go minimun ram, 128 mb for xp is to low.
first go to upgrade more than 256 mb memory.
processor speed also effect the computer speed.
then, u will need to consider about start up program like ym, antivirus, etc. if to many program load during startup, it will fill up the computer memory. The result is, slow system.
do not leave un-used program, close it including system tray application (near windows clock).
you may notice that viruses can make system slow, but if u install more than one antivirus in one computer, not a good idea. it will not system though, but worse and slow or can go to system crash
using defrag software also can improve system speed (speed files access on hard disk drive). i suggest O&O defrag software.

Hello Tina! I see that your computer is slow and want some advice. First thing I wonder is how many programs do you have running concurrently. Running more than one app at a time, which happens a lot, takes up more ram usage and thus things slow down. I'm guessing you've only got 128mb of SDRAM, but you should beef it up to at least 256. When getting ram you need to visit a place like www.crucial.com (I don't work for them... honest!) and see the specs on your system! If you have two slots, can go up to say 512mb, then you could buy a 256mb SDRAM card and have 384mb of ram so things will work fast(er) and better. That's what I've done. So programs want either 512mb or even a whole gig. That's one step. Another thing you may want to do is visit www.pcpitstop.com, set up a visitor account, and then allow them to check your system via an ActiveX program. Following the test it'll give you a rundown on it's recommendations. To check and see what's all running on your system, press control+alt+delete (if I'm correct) and it'll tell you all the details of what's going on. Another tip is to knock off of your system things you don't use or want. Sometimes things not in use can hinder as well. Good luck.

There are a number of things you can do to improve your computer performance. Try these easy steps:
1. Remove any temporary files with Disk Cleanup. Go to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup. It will scan your computer for obsolete files. Make sure to check Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, Download Programs and Recycle Bin. Make sure not to check Compress Files. This should get rid of a lot of junk.
2. Defrag your hard drive. Over time, files saved on the hard drive are fragmented. To speed up access to these files, use Disk Defragmenter to consolidate them. Go to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter. Select Analysis and check to see how fragmented your hard drive is and then choose Defrag. This might take awhile - could be minutes or hours depending on how large your hard drive is and how defrag the files are.
3. Decrease the number of start up programs. You don't need all your programs to load at startup. Just choose which programs are vital and need to be always on. Go to Start Menu > Run > type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks). Select the Startup Tab. Decide what programs you want to keep and uncheck the ones you don't want to load at startup. If you don't know what a particular program does, go to Bleeping Computer's Startup List and look it up (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/)
3. Decrease the number of special visual effects. Fancy backgrounds, animated toolbars and other visual effects are pleasing to the eye but take a lot of resources. Using Control Panel > Display > choose to use the Classical Windows Theme and choose a background without an image - I have a solid blue background. There other visual effects you can turn off but I am getting tired and don't want to type too much more. If you want to know how to turn off the other visuals effects, drop me an email.
4. Scan your hard drive for viruses and spyware. There are several free security programs. You should have at least an antivirus, anti spyware and firewall program running on your computer. Spyware is the second most common cause of a slow computer. Go to www.filehippo.com and look under both Anti Spyware and Firewall and Security.
These are the simple things you can do. Other tweaks are:
1. optimize the page file
2. remove bad registry keys
3. defrag the registry
4. defrag the page file
5. optimize hard drive with CacheMon
6. optimize memory
If you want more details, drop me an email.

I had this problem a couple days ago. What I had to do is either right-click on the c drive and click format or if it doesn't allow you to do that shut the computer down and then start it back up and before the main system starts up a screen should say something about setup. do this and then format. CAUTION!!! if you format the drive ALL information will be DELETED!!! so back up your information to a usb memory card or something. Hope it works for you, mine was infected with a virus. now the virus is gone and it it considerably faster.

well it depends on system specs and if it is a clean installation and it is running slow then more than likely your computer does need upgrading... but most likely too much stuff on the hard drive or too long since last maintenance... try running a scandisk on the system then defragging
