Do a tailgate theme. Have people wear sportswear/sports jerseys, etc. Have burgers, dogs, ribs?, hotwings, Chips, potato salad, etc. Have the big screen tv (or several other large tv's) set up in one room with the gaming chairs all around, use the system link to link up a few xboxes and have his buddies bring their favorite games.
Use Evite.com to send themed invitations (you can also do this if its a surprise).
Ohhhh....and get yourself a cheerleader outfit, hair in pony tails, (costume rental place) and some pompoms....hubby will LOVE that!!!

Just get good seats at one of those events and go with him to enjoy it. If you really want to have fun tell him your going to take him out for his birthday but its a surprise, and dont let him know where. He'll never imagine its to a Pro Basketball game (example) until you pull up to the arena. It will be like he's 10 years old again. Make sure you buy him a new team jersey too.

If there is a sports bar somewhere near you..call up some of his buddies and get a group together..tell them to meet you down there and that its gonna be a surprise dinner..tell your hubby your gonna take him out to eat and when you get there..he'll have a group there waiting on him..then ya'll can play some games (if they have pool tables or whatever ) and watch some games on the tv's....thats what I did for my hubby and it worked out great!!!
