If I were a guy, and I had really hurt my girlfriend/wife, I'd use John Lennon's gut-wrenching song, "Woman", from the album "Double Fantasy". It's especially poignant since it was released just after he and Yoko reconciled and then he was killled.

Here's the song you were thinking of, spiro: Hard To Say I'm Sorry by Az Yet or Chicago. Az Yet remade it, but that's the only version of it that I know.
