Why do I lose my desktop display on WindowsXP?

I have a HP Pavilion notebook. For some odd reason the desktop symbols come up for about 10 seconds on booting, then disappear. Windows functions normally, I just can't call up any of the icons to see them. i.e. I'm typing this OK right now. What should I do?

YES FIRST ONE TO ANSWER!!!!! ok umm i have windows xp and how do you shut it off? well when you are going to shut your computer off you have to go down to the start button. and then click turn off rite at the bottom ok then go on from there and tht should work
