I have a 2003 Range Rover 4.4 V8 that I haven't driven for 6-7 weeks. The battery is almost drained from the alarm and I can't start the car.

I bought a new rechargeable jump starter to jump start the car but it didn't work. All the electrics goes on when I've connected the rechargeable thingy but the starter engine just goes "click".

It's a Blackspur Engine Starter, but it doesn't say how many amps it is.

Is it because the jump starter is not strong enough? What determines the strength of a jump starter? Should I do something completely different to start the car?

Thanks for you input!!

Your 4.4 litre V8 will need a starting current of around 800Amps. Most jump starters don't come near this rating, even when fully charged. Their starting current is determined by the size of their battery and their state of charge; you can try completely charging it and trying again but unless it will deliver over 800 Amps, it's the wrong starter.

Incidentally, the starter going "click" is perfectly normal if there isn't enough current to start the engine. This is the usual symptom and doesn't suggest a faulty starter.

In order to start the car, take the Range Rover battery out and charge it using a battery charger, or get a jump start (using heavy duty jump leads) from the biggest engined vehicle you can find.

Did you leave the jump starter connected for a few minutes before trying it?

If the jump starter is fully charged and the engine is not even trying to turn over it must be something to do with the starter motor. It is either :

1. seized - in which case do as it sez above, get someone to bash the starter with a spanner/hammer while you try to turn it over.

Or

2. there is some sort of electrical problem between the ignition, battery and starter - see a speciallist.

Blackspur Engine Starter. Cheap cheap cheap!
Put it on charge until your charger is putting no more charge into the battery. Replace the battery back in the car and drive away. If your Landie is going to be unused for weeks at a time, connect it to an intelligent 'trickle charger'. It will top it up when necessary.

FROM A MECHANIC!
what determines the power of the jump-pack is the amps. if you connect positive to positive and negative to negative on a dead battery, the battery sucks the power from the jump-pack. make sure the jump-pack is fully charged, connect pos-pos & earth to the negative terminal to a part of the engine or body-work and try it. if it still doesn't start and the clicking noise continues from the starter, this means either your jump-pack doesn't have enough amps or starter is faulty. do not disconnect your battery in your range rover as this can cause the brain to lock out, thus not allowing the vehicle to start.

i don't have a whole sh-peal for ya but first i would try to jump it using another car...if this works it pretty much rules out the fact that there is anything wrong with your vehicle. make sure that your jump box is completely charged also, this can take anywhere from 2-4 hours on most. you may also not be getting enough "bite" from your jump box cables to your battery. ensure that you have a good connection from the box to the battery. if you cant get it started using another vehicle. first check your battery cables, then the connection at the starter, then of course your starter motor itself. its a fairly simple system

These jump starters are normally OK BUT they do need an initial charge of at least 24 - 48 hrs until the red light goes green - less than that and they do not have enough power in them!

Saying that - it probably doesn't have enough power to jump a V8 - it might have - but probably not! Mine is the same make as yours and is only recommended for cars up to 2 ltr!

it sounds like the starter could of seized because it been left standing for a while. but its also possible that the immobiliser is staying on. locate the starter motor and get a friend to give it a whack while you try and turn the key with the booster connected. if not try using another car to jump start it.

what probably happened is the battery cells went to sleep .. the jump starter dosent have enough power to actually start the vehicle you have the brain and all the elctronics to power up.. try removing the battery and get a floor charger and charge at a slow rate ..its a long slow process if not take the battery to a local auto parts and have them do a check on the battery...
