I thought they were both the same thing but maybe I'm wrong.

They are two different species of lizards.

I dont know the EXACT difference, like the scientific stuff, but I can answer your question.
A Beardie is a desert dwelling lizard, living in australia, that eats a variety of insects and plant matter. They are friendly, grow to 2 ft long, and are the most common reptile pet besides the green iguana.
A Uromastyx is a desert dwelling lizard (dont know from where) that eats mainly(or only, not sure there either) plant matter. They are friendly and I dont know how popular they are, nor how long they get.
The physical difference is VERY apparent. The face of a beardie is sort of flat and wedge shaped. A Uromastyx has a pushed in nose and is much fatter looking.
Sorry for the lack on info for the Uro, but I only reently heard of them myself. (oct. 06)

They are completely different species, and look nothing alike if you search for pictures of them... Beardies are Australian while there are many species of Uromastyx spanning from Africa to India.
If you're asking what the difference in care/temperment is, they are fairly similar. Beardies are omnivorous, while Uros are generally kept as strict vegetarians (some feed them crickets, not recommended). Most of the commonly kept Uro species are similar in size to beardies, so cage size is pretty much identical. Beardies need a basking spot of around 100 degrees (I think), while Uros need spots of 120 degrees or higher. Uros are usually a little more sensitive and flighty, and few will tolerate as much handling as a bearded dragon. I greatly prefer Uromastyx myself, I think they have more personality, and they're cheaper to feed.

Uromastyx have Spiky talis and are different becuase some are yellow. Beardies have spikes all over the side of their bodt and sides of there head. Try this.
