I started my period the summer before the 6th grade. By 7th grade, I was using tampons. I was a heavy bleeder and constantly had to go to the nurse because of spots on my clothes. They also helped with odor and made it much easier to play sports. They don't move like pads do and you don't know you have one on if you insert it correctly.
I would start with the smallest size (absorption) you can find for your first experience. Good luck...

Using a tampon helps to eliminate odor if you are a heavy bleeder. I do not recommend scented tampons because it's been linked to Toxic Shock.
I'm not sure how old you are, but I would wait until you're at least 14-16. I started mine when I was in the 5th grade and didn't start using tampons until I was in 9th grade.
But again, if you are a heavy bleeder, tampons can sometimes be a lifesaver! Pads can be a mess and cause a very unwanted odor.
Hope this helps, and always consult with your mother about this. Because if you don't change them regularly like you should you do have to worry about Toxic Shock. Just check with an adult that you are close with.

As soon as I learned about tampons. I dislike pads a lot. I have never had a problem with tampons. The best brand I have found is tampax pearls- no leaks ever! I am 32 years old and have used tampons since I began having periods at 13. Always wash your hands BEFORE using them because this will help cut down on the transfer of bacteria. Follow all directions & you won't have any problems.

you need to use a tampon each time now. Normality has no longer something to do with it. I used pads for the 1st 2 years of my era and then moved to tampons because of the fact it became into easier to be lively with tampons. this is totally just about determination.

I used pads for a long time, but I also used tampons whenever it was necessary (i.e. swimming, or anything else with close fitting clothing). There's really not any risk in using tampons when you're younger versus when you're older provided you read the information provided and are aware of the risks of Toxic Shock Syndrome.

I used tampons during my first period as it was summertime and I was going swimming. I typically switch between pads and tampons nowadays, depending on how light it is.
