if it jumps about quite a bit while your driving it sounds like it could be a bad earth, but it is quite normal for a guage to fluctuate a little as the fuel swishes around as you drive

Could be a bad earth but the peugeot 406 have speedo clock problems where any of the gauges go faulty which is more common on the mk1 406 N reg to T reg. Make sure if you buy a set of speedo clock that the part number is the same, not all of them are the same.

Hope this is helpful

I had this take place to me. After the gasoline replaced into decrease than a a million/2 tank the gauge began appearing all erratic. it fairly is maximum possibly the sending unit long gone undesirable. it fairly is linked to the gasoline pump interior the gasoline tank. considering the fact that they are going to drop the gasoline tank than you're able to evaluate changing the gasoline pump. Assuming you have allot of miles and age to the motor vehicle and plan on keeping the vehicle.

this could be a defective connection make sure the connector on the feed wire is not corroded. or the wire itself. make sure there is'nt a break in the wire and that it hasn't chaffed the insulation off on the bodywork and intermittently touching to earth and causing fluxuation. to test earth out sender wire with jumper lead gauge should read full then wriggle wire about and watch gauge for fault

try checking all the ground wires on it,sometimes a bad ground will cause one to do this, since you already changed the tank unit in it,it has to be either in a ground or the actual plug where it connects to the back of the dash unit, i have seen those give a few problems once in a while, good luck,i hope this help,s.
