Most partially sighted people use a software program like Zoom Text which alters the background and text to provide high resolution and increased magnification. Others take advantage of the Windows operating system accessibility options which can be set from the Control Panel. Web browsers, such as Internet Explorer, can be set to change the background and text of websites.

Blind people, with good hearing, often use an audio screen reader, such as Jaws for Windows. They are specialist programs which follow the cursor around the Windows screen providing an ongoing talking commentary. They do not use a mouse or a screen, but navigate with the arrow keys and the tab button. If desired, speech can be used in conjunction with an electronic Braille display to provide an accurate tactile reference of spelling and numbers.

Deafblind people, those who have both a visual and a hearing disability together, use an electronic Braille display. This consists of 20 to 80 cells of Braille, each with six small pins which change as the computer reads text and figures on documents. When used in conjunction with a desktop or laptop computer, the Braille display is placed before the keyboard for easy use.

Hello jasontheameteur,

On the Macintosh there's a Universal Access System Preferences setting that offers something called VoiceOver. With this turned on, the Mac's built-in voice function tells you where ever your mouse arrow moves up to (including menu commands and icon names).
