this trait is obviously carried on the x chromosome. the mother carries it on only one chromosome, and the father carries it only on his x chromosome.

Hmm ... you didn't complete the question.
"... that a child would ..." what? Have the trait? Or be a carrier?
The chances are 50% that the child would have (exhibit) the trait.
The chances are 75% that the child would be a carrier.
The above is assuming that it is a typical X-linked recessive trait (which is the majority of cases of sex-linked traits). We can assume this because the question says that the woman is a carrier, but does not say she is an exhibitor of the trait. (I.e. if it were a X-linked dominant trait, and being a carrier would make the mother exhibit the trait, then the question would say so.) If it were an X-linked dominant trait, then not only would she exhibit the trait herself, but the odds of the child *exhibiting* the trait would go up ... perhaps as high as 75% ... as the mother would be passing the trait on to all daughters and half her sons.
Oh, and we know it's not a Y-linked trait because it says the mother is a carrier.

Each child would have a 50% chance of having an inheritable trait. But if it's learned behavior trait, you're looking at a considerably higher percentage.

Chance for male: 0.5
chance for male expressing the trait: (0.5)(0.5) = 0.25
chance for female: 0.5
chance for female expressing the trait: (0.5)(0.5)= 0.25
chance that the child either male or female would express the trait: (0.25)+(0.25) = 0.5 *100 = 50 %
