Find the equation, in slope-intercept form, of the line that passes through the points (-7, -2) and (-4, 1).

I think where I am stuck is, first I have to find the slope, right? I'm not sure if it's 3 or -3/11. Grrr.. this is so hard.

To find the slope, the equation is: (y2-y1)/(x2-x1) so, substitute the values in. (-7,-2) (-4.1)

(1+2)/(-4+7)= 3/3 or slope=1

Now to find the equation.

y=mx+b

Plug the slope in

y=1x+b

Plug a point in such as (-4,1)

1=1(-4)+b
1=-4+b
b=5

So your equation is:

y=x+5

The slope is (change in y)/(change in x)

For your 2 points, change in y is -2 - 1 = -3

change in x is -7 - (-4) = -7 + 4 = -3

So you have -3/-3 = 1 for the slope

ok so first you need to know the slope intercept form equation, which is:
y=mx+b
x and y are a random point on the line, and m is ur slope, and b is the y intercept
so first, lets find the slope, or m, which is rise over run
(1--2)/(-4--7)=3/3=1, so ur slope is 1
so now you can plug that into ur equation
y=x+b
next we can plug in an x and y value, so we'll use the (-4,1) point, so:
1=-4+b, and if you simplify that its 5=b, so the y intercept is 5
and now ur equation is:
y=x+5

The standard form of a linear equation is ax + by = c.
We need to determine a, b, and c.

Since (-7, -2) should satisfy the equation, we have
-7a - 2b = c.

Since (-4, 1) should satisfy the equation, we have
-4a + b = c.

Now we can equate them to obtain -7a - 2b = -4a + b.
We can rewrite as -3b = 3a. Thus, we need a = -b.
Let b = 1 and a = -1. From the second equation, we have
-4(-1) + 1 = c. Hence, c = 5. Therefore, the equation
we seek is -x + y = 5.

Using m = (y2 - y1) / (x2 - x1)

Gradient, m = [1 - (-2) ] / [- 4 - (-7) ] = 3 / 3 = 1

Line passes thro` point (- 4,1) and has gradient m = 1.
Equation of line is given by using formula:-
y - b = m (x - a)

y - 1 = 1. (x - (- 4))
y - 1 = x + 4
y = x + 5

slope = (y1-y2)/((x1-x2) The order of subtraction is the same for y and x.
