Maybe by about the year 2010, but never is a much better answer. The reason is that there are free operating systems, such as Kubuntu available at www.kubuntu.org that are much more secure and stable than Vista, and cause much less headaches than Vista.

Be very careful.

I have just had a new PC with the option to use Vista, and have done much reading on the subject.

Even though it sounds the best thing since sliced bread, there are some drawbacks, and unless you have a problem with XP why change.

With the Home Basic Vista you have many of the new features, but you do not have a lot of the extras which the Premium has, and it will not be long before you will want to upgrade to the Premium. This then is an additional cost. to having already purchased the the Basic.

Another thing I have read is that you spend quite a long time trying to fathom out how actually to get into the opening screen in order to get onto the internet. Microsoft has rearranged everything so that it is quite dificult to navigate.

Think twice before you do switch. If you are not a prolific gamer, or home DVD watcher, you are better off staying with XP.

Yet again it is Microsoft trying to make yet more money out of us Joe Public.

normally you should wait for at least 18 months after a new operating system is launched before buying it
this gives microsoft enough time to plug any gaps in the code, and for enough updates to become avalible
however vista is unlike any previous os,it had more pre and beta testing than any other os microsoft have created before
so really the answer to your question is "when you are ready",but bear in mind, vista is not a very good choice if you are a avid gamer,as direct x 10 is only supported by currently one graphic card series, the 8800 series of cards are very expensive(£200-£450),so this on top of say £350 for the full version of vista ultimate is nearly a grands worth of hardware and software, your bank manager will be having kittens!
good luck

I intend never upgrading, as XP is more than adequate for my needs, besides which, the pricing is exceedingly steep.

Eventually, I'll have to get a new computer, so Vista will be standard (unless I get a Mac). Until then, I'll carry on as normal.

wait until 64bit vista is "really" useable i.e.....when there are drivers for sound and printers and such and bugs are fixed and for gamers wait until directx 10 games are released and 8800 series cards come down in price!!
