You can put as much in as you want. Most banks are FDIC insured but only up to $100,000 . If you have more than one account at the same bank in different account categories, you can be insured for $100,000 on each account. IRA's deposited at a bank are insured for up to $250,000.

Ask your bank. MY bank has no limit and I have had tens of thousands in one checking account at one particular time.

Some checkings will pay you a higher interest rate for having a larger amount.

You can put as much in as you and your bank is comfortable with.

However it is only insured by the FDIC for $100,000 per depositor. so having multiple accounts doesn't help.
