nVidia Geforce FX 5500 PCI 256MB

the geforce 5500 is garbage....i used to have one
that ati card should be far superior. has faster core faster memory and should have a newer chipset.
see if you can find an nvidia 7600gs or something for a good price. they arent the best, but much better that those 2

NVIDIA GeForce FX 5700 or greater
ATI Radeon 8500 or greater
ATI Radeon X1300 PCI 256MB is greater than Radeon 8500.
nVidia Geforce FX 5500 PCI 256MB is less than NVIDIA GeForce FX 5700.

You reported Gaming, i could unquestionably advise you to get the GeForce 9600 GT as a substitute The GSO is merely a crippled version of the GT, with some shader units disabled in case you're able to have the money for the 9600 GT, you have a winner there

NONE of those cards are great for games, just maybe solitaire.
