The most fundamental rule? The adults must make adult decisions.
Next: with rules, discipline and rewards, be swfit, consistent and fair. Children need chores to learn how to a) do those things and b) take care of themselves as adults.
Spend time with them on reading, homework, zoos (forget Disneyland), libraries, computers, friends, free play, adventuring into the woods, garage sales. Stay involved with their teachers and their friends' parents.
Use words that are "over their head"; it will build a huge vocabulary. Read every night and pray with them every night. Have a set, reasonable bedtime. Let them do most of the work on school projects. Love them, protect them, teach them, and then let them go.

Make him earn his keep. He'll be the happiest kid on the block. He'll feel like he's needed & worthwile. Also ,spend time with them. Don't use work as an excuse not to be there for him.

You spent a lot of time with them like take them to nice places for example: Disney land... make them feel loved and wanted.. tell the stories before they go to bed!
but don't be over protected! it's not good for the child!!
