In 1850, Russia was a hereditary monarchy, ruled by a Tsar. Today the monarchy no longer is in power - having ended with the death of Tsar Nicholas II in 1917. Some of his relatives survive today, but Russia was changed to be ruled by a President, a Federal Assembly, and a judiciary.

at the end of the 1800's, Russia freed the serfs. That was a huge deal because most of Russia was involved in agriculture.
1905 - they tried to revolt, but the Czar was able to avert a crisis by instilling the Russian Duma, a sort of parliament with the industrial workers. Too bad it didnt really work.
1917 - Russian Revolution.
The Bolsheviks (Lenin and friends) take over the government. They bring Socialism and Communism to Russia. Command economy, the Poliburo (the Communist Party) becomes the central focus of the government and they are to decide what will be produced and how it will be produced.
1935 - the Constitution
The Constitution sets down the law of the land for these people as well as offer women some more power. This Constitution states the new rights of the government as well as lays down the rule for the Poliburo.
STALIN COMES TO POWER.
He tries the 5-year plans. The 5-year plans were a series of plans crafted so that Russia would be able to industrialize quickly. The administration sponsored years, such as "the Tractor Year" that would allow farmers to get tractors and produce more efficiently. As I mentioned above, Russia was largely agricultural. The 5-year plans were successful to a certain extent. However, much of the technological advances were counteracted by Stalin's politics of terror. Any political dissenter was sent to a Gulag, or a work camp, where people were basically either worked to death or tortured to death.
1945 - the end of WW2
Stalin gets together with FDR and then Truman, and Winston Churchill to decide Europe's fate post-WW2. Stalin promises he will remove his army, which now remained in most of Europe (after fighting Germany) and let the invaded countries instill democratic governments. However, Stalin did not honor his promise and left his armies in Russia. The U.S. at the same time is keeping friendships with Western Europe as Stalin keeps his army in Eastern Europe. Stalin basically took over eastern europe and made it communist. This is what Churchill referred to in his famous "iron curtain" speech. "An Iron Curtain has set from the Trieste in the Baltic Sea to the Adriatic Sea" -- meaning that the Russian Bloc had divided Europe between democratic and communist. This starts the Cold War and its consequences.
Berlin was divided between Western Berlin (allied with Western Europe) and Eastern Berlin (allied with Russia).
1950's - the Space Race. The Russians get the first satellite, Sputnik, to space in 1957 while the Americans cant seem to get it right, so NASA is finally created.
1960's - Arms Race. Cuba went communist in the 50's and the U.S. had a new western enemy. In 1962, JFK negotiated the Cuban Misile Crisis. What happened was that the Russian government had put some missiles in Cuba...these missiles could hit American soil. So for a couple of days, the world was on the verge of nuclear warfare. Fortunately, the ships returned home and nothing major happened.
1970's - Arms race. I think it was Nikita Khruschev, the sort of "President" of the USSR that admitted Stalin's wrongdoings with his gulags (after all, it is estimated that more than 20 million people died in those gulags). The U.S. established a relationship with the USSR.
1980's - Reagan and the Communists. So Reagan built up his weapon arsenal...he hated the Communists...
1980-something - Gorbachev became the 'president' of the USSR. He begun two policies - glasnost and perestroika. Glasnost is known as political openness, which meant some sort of political freedom for Russia. Perestroika means restructuring of the central economic system which helped Russia sort to speak.
1989 - Berlin wall falls. Boris Yeltsin helps bring the communist government down and...yeah. that's it.
Then I dont really know what happened after this.
