Coarse unrefinned salt is mixed with sand for the road. I use softner salt mixed with sand for my driveway and sidewalk.

Basically any kind of salt would do: it only lowers the freezing point. But probably the most widely used salt is rock salt (NaCl). It is very cheap, available everywhere. The problem with it is that it is very corrosive and it kills the roadside plants. That's why calcium chloride is a better alternative, it is not that corrosive (but more expensive).
