to answer your question about the truck dying, its normal for the engine to stall whenever you remove the snorkel from the throttle body, you're introducing unmeasured air into the intake .
I'm assuming it's an 4.3L engine because the 5.7L engine has an adjustable distributor.
best way to diagnose, is to know what the code is that's causing the check engine light to come on.
if you had the intake gasket replaced, that means the distributor was pulled out. and my guess is that it was not reinstalled correctly, one tooth off will cause the problem you're having.
and yes it can be installed 1 tooth off, either advance or retard. this will set a code p1345
crankshaft positionCKP-camshaft position CMP correlation...
very common with outside shops ..you need scanner to monitor camshaft retard degrees.
must manually hold idle at 1000 rpm and adjust CMP retard
to o deg. +/- 2 deg. the check engine light will come on at about 10 deg. out. so I think you are way out on the timing .since the light is on.
if you had it done at a shop, take it back ,and have them check it .

I'm pretty confident that your truck will run fine, once you take care of the timing issue

good luck

exactly what did you have done to your intake?.......new gasket,s?.....................sound,s like large vacuum leak.......take it back to the place that did your work......or check your computer code,s....02 sensor...say lean mixture?........try this....if you had your intake manifold gasket,s replaced.....then with engine running....squirt some oil all along the gasket seam....if it suck,s the oil in.....then you have a bad gasket or poor workmanship....I know the oil trick is a bit messy...but it,s a definite giveaway!.. good luck.....hope this help,s.
