The Romans used a construction called a hypocaust. Basically, the bath was a masonry building. There was a hollow space under the floor of the pools. On one side of the the hollow space was a fireplace, where wood and charcoal were kept continuously. There were chimney opennings which led up throught the walls, which were also hollow. Since exhaust from the fireplace had to pass through the hollow area to reach the chimney, the bottom of the pools was hot, and caused the water to be warm.
