I want to get divorced but I don't know how to get started

If your wife is willing to divorce you too, it can be relatively inexpensive. Go to your local county clerk and ask for an outline of the steps. Normally Office Max can PRINT out the documents you need to fill out for a minimal amount (don't buy the pre-made packets - you won't need all that paperwork, and it's more expensive).

If you think you and your wife may need someone to help you determine how the assets are most equitably divided, get a mediator. It's cheaper than an attorney, and they allow you to talk with eachother to come to an agreement.

If your wife is willing to go to the ends of the earth to keep you, you may need to retain a lawyer. That can be expensive... think $1000 as a retainer (but that will vary depending on your location and the reputation of the lawyer). Trust me though, you will use every bit of the retainer and end up owing more.

...and it needs to be said: Have you seen a marriage counselor? They are much cheaper and more win/win than divorce.

There are two ways I know of.
#1: If you both can compromise and it is a mutual decision, then you could go to your local library and copy a generic set of divorce papers, fill them out and pay a small filing fee to end the marriage. It will still take a waiting period in most states. Keep in mind though that some states may require attendance in counseling classes before it is granted and that does cost extra. It is also unwise to try the self file method if kids are involved.
#2: Hire an attorney. This is always an expensive method. I don't know of anyone that hasn't spent in the thousands of dollars going with an attorney, but remember, if you make this large of a mistake in life you will most certainly have a price to pay. This should be a learning lesson on getting to know what you want in life or what another person is really like before deciding to make a lifelong commitment.

Hope this information is helpful.

The initial cost just depends on what a lawyer will charge you, speak to one for a general idea. The rest is up to you and your spouse.
If you both want it over with ASAP, then you both should sit down and discuss who gets what. Find a resolution and then seek a lawyer together or seperate (it will be faster in the long run and the lawyers get nothing more than the paperwork fees). If your in for a fight, it just depends on how long you want to wait and how much money you want your lawyers to make. The piece of the pie (money)will get smaller if you both can't come up with a reasonable agreement.
In general Divorce can either be reasonable (paperwork) or outrageous (lawyers involved). The longer you fight the less money will be there to split up.

My divorce is up to 3000 and running, I figure it will be up to 6000 by the time it is over in June. I would suggest a dissolusion if you dont really have anything to fight over, or are both agreeable, it is much much cheaper and quicker.

If both of you agree, it can be done with $100-200.

If you have lots of money and assets, it can run into thousands.
