I suppose the short answer is that, because of the state of their scientific learning, the Elizabethans were probably a lot more apt to believe that MAGIC might be a reasonable explanation for certain phenomena.

This is not exactly the same point, but think about how many times Shakespeare got HUGE dramatic mileage from putting TWINS onstage. For his audience, the existence of two IDENTICAL beings must have been a real jaw-dropper.
