Actually, the traditional way to wear the keffieh, as worn by Arabic tribes is a very complicated pattern. Palestinians youth fighting the first Intifadah, and before that PFLP and PLO fighters in Lebanon came out wearing the same piece of garb but in a more "concealing" fashion, to hide their identity. As for british SAS and RM Commandos, I heard there is no regulation pattern, since the shemagh is supposed to be worn as a scarf. When wrapped around the head, it's mainly in order to protect the wearer from elements (ie sandstorm) or when riding vehicules (Pinkies, VLRA, WMIK). The main idea is to have the shemagh tightly wrapped and secured by elastic strap, in WWII usually an arabic headband, today rather the strap of some SWD goggles

I'm actually trying to figure that out myself...I'm going to an airsoft op and I have to wear a shemag....I'll find a site and be back to you
