Some varieties of cherry tree do have peeling bark we have a tree that does that normally as well.

Totally agree with Andy. Looks like a physical injury to me. Most likely animal damage.

It is a problem if the fluffy attacker is allowed to continue attacking your tree. That is definitely not natural peeling or flaking due to pathogen attack.

Keep you eye out for squirrel or rabbit or even cat or bird damage.

It looks like something has hit youre tree and peeled the bark

Natural. that is what cherry tree trunks do. The bark is slick with the outer layer peeling and curling.

this sometimes happens naturally do you live in a windy spot as the wind can twist a tree and makes things loose.
