If you own an Xbox 360 and an HDTV, this really is a no brainer. The picture quality is simply stunning, and the interactivity (In Movie Experience as it's sometimes called) is streets ahead of DVD and interestingly, also blu-ray (which has very simplistic DVD level interactivity).

The choice of movies on HD DVD is still quite limited, but as the only disc format with no region coding it's easy to buy movies from the US, Japan, and elsewhere in Europe. Well worth shopping around too, as sometimes movies which Sony has the exclusivity to in the US (such as The Prestige) are available on HD DVD in Europe due to distribution deals.

It's unfortunate that Sony have once again tried to force their own format onto consumers, instead of adopting HD DVD, which is the official successor to DVD. It's far too early to say who will win, or how many years it will take, but as this device is so cheap it's a low risk way to get amazing quality HD video.
