xx and rskturner: I've heard about this but it doesn't make sense to me; that's only a portion of the population so how can they know that exactly 32 million people saw x program?

These television companies arrange research companies to get this data for them. I used to work for one of this company. Its very simple. The research companies send people either door to door or via telephone asking people what channel they prefer n why. What programme they like n why. What time they watch TV and why...etc etc.. This data is compiled to find out what programme is good. How many people are watching.. n what. Hope this clears your question

Some families become Neilsen familes where they connect a program to your tv to see what shows or program you watch the most.
