The value season generally means lower crowds and lower prices, so it can be a really great time to go. They usually offer really great promotions as well. Just keep in mind, during the off season is when Disney does most of the work that they need done, for example, refurbishments. So, not everything may be open when you are there, so make sure you check before you choose your dates so you don't miss out on anything you really want to see.
Supposedly for 2007 Disney is working a little differently with their seasons. The deluxe resorts and the villas have slightly different dates in some cases than the values and moderates. So here is what you can consider:
Deluxe and villas:
January 1 through February 14
July 8 through October 3
November 25 through December 19
Value and moverates:
January 1 thourhg February 14
August 5 through October 3
November 25 through Devember 19
Personally, I do think it is cost effective to stay onsite. A lot of people claim staying offsite saves you money but I don't really see it. Once you add in all the benefits you get to staying onsite, for example great transportation, a free shuttle too and from the airport, the option to add on dining, free parking, etc. etc. and then figure in any savings that you may get with a promotion, it isn't always cheaper to stay offsite.
I feel the benefits to staying onsite far outweigh staying offsite and the costs really aren't that different. The dining plan can save you 40% on your dining, which you can't get offsite, so you may be stuck with all counter-service meals or making things on your own or eating offsite. Disney offers a discount for almost every day of the year, it can be anything from a discounted room, to free ticket upgrades to free dining, it just depends on the time of year and what they offer. Plus, you get the great Disney service and a clean room, the two more important things to me.
So, in my opinion it is worth staying onsite because of all the benefits and the fact that it usually doesn't cost anymore. I've answered another question about the benefits of staying onsite, so I won't paste it here because it is a little on the long side, but I will include the link for you if you are interested.
Feel free to e-mail if you have any questions, I love to help!
Good luck with your planning!

Going to Disney in the off season is a great way to save a little on your vacation. However there are drawbacks to this. The park hours are going to be shorter than during their normal seasons, and some attractions and parades that normally would be going are closed or shut down for re-furbishments. The crowds tend to be a little less, but when you think about it, Disney is always crowded. I personally go during the peak times. It is a little more expensive, but have always found that every attraction and show I want to see is up and running.
If you are going, no matter when you go, staying at one of the Disney hotels is an absolute must!! There are many perks that come with staying at a Disney hotel. First of all, the famous Disney service is part of any stay, whether it is at the value resorts, moderate, or deluxe. There is unlimited use of the transportation system, so you don't have to worry about parking. They offer extra magic hours, where every day one of the parks is open early for resort guests only, and one is open late, again for resort guests only. Take advantage of this! No waiting in lines, no hassle, the whole park to yourself. Also, one little known fact is that resort guests are allowed to enter the parks no matter the crowds. However, those not staying on property are not subject to that rule. There has been a time or two when I have been there with the family and people were standing in line to get into the park, but I was allowed to bypass that as a resort guest. That is definitely something to think about when you go.
When you go, make sure to get the park hopper option on your passes. Although it is a little more expensive, it is worth the cost. As I said, there have been a few times that a particular park has been crowded when we got there. With the park hopper option, your not stuck with that big crowd. You can hop on the transportation and shift gears and go to another park. Without the park hopper option, you can't do this. Having the park hopper gives you the freedom to come and go as you please.
For more info, there are two resources that I have found to work the best for me. First, go to www.disneyworld.com. Here you can get a quote on your vacation, from the hotel room to passes, the dining plan, and other perks. You will know exactly what you are looking at in terms of price. You can also view the attractions and the resorts, so you know which one you may want to stay at. Second is the Birnbaum's guide to WDW. There are many guide books out there, but this one is the best, in my opnion.
Have a great trip!!!

I can't tell you if staying at a resort is cost effective but I can answer your first question.
The best off season months are June, July, and August. Why? Because these are the hottest months here in Florida, very hot and humid, plus it is warm up north so people are less likely to come here. In the winter time prices are higher here because people up north want to escape the cold.

i think of Disney is working a undeniable ideal now.... 7 days for the fee of four after which you would be able to get hopper passes. the income of staying at a sort of inns is which you get prolonged hours on the parks. My dad and mom are relatively on the French Quarter now. they say that's captivating. and because they're staying on sources you get in an hour early and get to stay late. this nighttime they're on the Magic Kingdom till 3 am!!!! Plus you get loose shuttles between all the parks and the motel and you do no longer could subject approximately finding out to purchase parking ($12 an afternoon!!! in line with park) the income of the hopper passes is case in point whilst the Animal Kingdom closes for the nighttime you may flow over to the magic Kingdom and look at out stuff you're turning out to be ignored.yet in my opinion i think of you're able to do Magic Kingdom in an afternoon. i could say 2 days for Epcot, this is basically approximately like 2 parks in a single. you have all the destiny stuff interior the front and then all the countries interior the back. yet that's basically my opinion. I even have been to Magic Kingdom soo many circumstances that i've got not got lots pastime in alot of the flaws anymore. yet see the element is that in case you have those hopper passes you may examine out each and all of the parks for sometime and then spend time sorting out your popular areas yet another day! Tip: you may convey nutrition and beverages interior the park... nutrition may well be overvalued so i could recommend bringing water bottles which you would be able to fill at fountains and in line with danger p.c.. a lunch and do basically one meal interior the park. basically an concept!

We usually go around Martin Luther King day and it's not crowded at all!
We also stay at the parks, even if it costs a little more, you get extra benefits like extra park hours, purchases sent back to your room and free parking at the parks.
An excellent site for planning is Allears.net. They have the answers to pretty much EVERYTHING!
Good luck and have fun with the mouse :)
