She's actually a very good mystery writer. However, one problem is that, once you've read a few of her books, you probably can figure out "who done it" in all the rest.
She had a fine "bag of tricks", but she kept reusing the same ones again and again.
In the genre, however, I would not call her "mediocre" at all. I'd say she deserves a place near the top of that field.

For the same reason why people say Dan Brown is a mediocre writer when he's sold millions of books. The answer is in their style. They both write plot-driven books with little to no characterization. That doesn't mean the stories aren't entertaining, they often are. But on literary merits, the books tend to fall short. By the end of the story, the characters are often unchanged. Christie in particular also tends to follow a set formula in her books. If a reader pays attention, after reading a few of her mysteries, it becomes easy to determine the guilty party. In the end, the quality of a writer shouldn't be solely determined by how many books they sell.

I consider her a mediocre writer. Just because a writer has sold a trillion books, doesn't mean the writer's stuff is any good, it just means that there's a bunch of crazy people out there who like the writer's style.

I get to have my own personal opinion of an author, I don't care what others think, but book sales are nto going to change my mind about what I think about Agath Christie's poor development of her novels.

Many people believe her simple style is inferior to the writing of other mystery authors. I think the reason she sold so many books is that they were simply written and appealed to the average person at a time when many couldn't read very well.

Because her writing style wasn't so good, for some critics her style was to common.
But her style was it which made her so fun and easy to read.

So you can sell a lot of things, even when there are critic's who think what you are selling isn't so great.
