if i download vista theme, will i be able to change the theme back to my current windows xp theme? is the transformation permanent?

You can easily install any kinds of windows themes.
When installation is completed and you prefer the last theme,follow way given below:
Right click on desktop and choose "Properties".
On tab bar, click "Theme", then choose you last theme from combo box.
Also you can set the last theme via Appearence.

Indeed it is not - the transformation pack can be:
A) Removed via Add / Remove Programmed
B) Altered via Control panel -> Apperence and Themes and select Xp current.
