It means "from" in German/Swedish, that's why people think it would be part of the last name-- because that's how it was originally used.
I think its a fine middle name or first name. I've known a few guys with the first name "Van". So I guess in the bet, I am on your side! :)

If you want to use it I am sure it would be okay as a middle name. Since the middle name isn't used as frequently it is a great place to be a little more crazy. As an adult if the child hates the middle name they can easily just use the first initial or just stop using it all together. :)
It would be like using the middle name Ann in this name.
Lilly Anne Smith. When reading it, its clear that Lilly is the first name, Anne is the middle name and Smith is the last name. When I say it sounds like Lillian Smith. Can't even tell what it really is. It wouldn't be any more of a big deal than this.

People would probably think it was part of a last name. Van as a first name is good, though.

Love the name Van. You could name Donovan and call him Van for short or just plain name him Van!

Ummmm is your last name Mini?
Ford Van Mini, got a certain ring to it, doesn't it?
VAN? seriously? wouldn't that be like giving your child the middle name Mc or La or St or Mac or Der or De? Kinda silly looking, don't you think?
