There are numerous versions/models of Blackberry that are variations on a theme produced and branded for all networks but with differing model numbers, some on 2.5G (GPRS) and 3G so it all depends on which model you are refering to.

If you look on the RIM (Research in Motion) web site and check the specific model then you will be able to find out exactly what version you have.

2.5G is GPRS and sometimes EDGE
3G is 3G/UMTS/
3.5G is HSDPA - 1.8Mbps.

I hope this helps

3rd Generation or 3G is the next generation technology whereby phones can operate much faster data processing speeds and in some cases utilise video calling and services such as mobile TV. Most of the new Blackberry and other email devices do not support such things as video calling but have the 3G service for faster data transfer speeds, therefore if you are looking at the Blackberry Pearl 8100 or newer versions these will have the faster 3G software to enable faster internet/email access.

Its a Third generation

First Generation = VOICE ONLY
Second Generation = VOICE and TEXT
Third Generation = VOICE, TEXT and FILES (VIDEO, PICTURE, MP3 and more)
Phones capable of doing above come in respective catagories
Generation shows phone can send what different type of data, Such as voic text and files
So Black Berry is 3G

Some are some are not. The newer ones are. Although the 3g version doesnt have video call facilities. Its more of a business phone and they are used by companies which can be set up for internal emails who have for example engineers who are mobile can check their emails on the move. To be honest i would love one myself.
