There is probably not enough information in your question to make a sound diagnosis of your problem. The term "hard drive" or "hard disk" refers to the component inside your computer that stores information. It doesn't sound like the "hard drive" is necessarily the problem in your case.

You may want to consider running a windows system restore to reset the system to back before the problem started. Usually this will fix most minor software-related problems. To do this go to: Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore. Follow the instructions on the screen and choose a date before the problem began.

My Gateway did this. Sometimes hard-drives go bad. The computer will slow to a crawl but there will be no viruses or spyware on them. That was my signal tohave it looked at.

Heat is a big killer for laptops. Getting a heat sink has helped mine a lot, after I replaced the HD.

A heatsink is a plastic board with 1 or 2 fans in it that circulate air under the laptop. This controls the temperature and extends the computer's lifespan.

MAYBE YOUR HARD DRIVE IS DYING?. SOMETIMES THEY GO BAD. AND PROGRAMS WILL NOT OPEN OR RUN THE RIGHT WAY.DO YOU HAVE ENOUGH MEMORY IN YOUR PC? IF NOT PROGRAMS WILL OPEN AND RUN ALOT SLOWER IF YOU DON'T HAVE AT LEAST 512MB .EVERY TIME YOU OPEN A PROGRAM IT USES A LITTLE MEMORY.IF YOU HAVE MORE THEN ONE PROGRAM RUNNING ALL THE OPEN PROGRAMS USES MEMORY. DO YOU HAVE PROGRAMS RUNNING AT START UP? IF SO TRY TO KEEP THEM SHUT DOWN.SO THEY DON'T START WHEN THE PC STARTS UP.OR YOU MAY NEED TO INSTALL WINDOWS AGAIN.TO FIX SOME ERRORS THAT ARE SLOWING THE PC DOWN.DID YOU SCAN FOR VIRUSES? OR SPY WARE? THOSE CAN SLOW THE PC DOWN ALSO.

You're a confused little man Griffin. None of your question makes sense. For ex, you can't update windows if your hard drive is not working. So please do a better job of describing the problem if you want someone to help.
