I find it very interesting that back during the Civil War era, Democrats were mostly and almost exculsively rich, white men from the south. Big time supporters of big business (cotton, tabacco) exploited the working class (most notably slavery) and Republicans were at least against slavery...and some supported equal rights for everyone and such. It used to be the democrats were conservative and the republicans were the liberals...when and why did this all change?

Not everything has changed. In the election of 1864 the Dems adopted a plank that said the Civil War was unwinnable and we should negotiate a settlement with the Confederate states and bring the troops home. They almost won the election. If it had not been for the votes of the soldiers for Lincoln and some late Union victories, we would have cut and run and there would still be a Confederate States of America.

The 1960's is really when the Democrats started to champion things like Civil Rights and even then some Democrats were opposed. The South had been staunchly Democratic from the 1860's to the 1960's, when Presidents Kennedy and Johnson along with a Democratic Congress passed and signed into law the Civil Rights Act of 1964, basically making racial discrimination illegal. The major difference between Republicans and Democrats today is where responsibility for helping the less fortunate lies. Democrats would say that it is society's (the government's) responsibility to feed the poor and help those in need. Republicans would say that it is all of our (personal) responsibility to help the poor in our own communities. Generally, Democrat = more centralized government control Republican = more local government control, in modern politics.

The basis of both parties never changed, only the people and the times. Republicans are still for the treament of everyone being equal in court, schools, buisnesses, etc, etc. Democrats and other Liberals are for keeping minorities seperate, like with the whole Affirmitive Action thing. Apparently they don't get that being a hard worker and earning your job or education in some circumstances, is the most important thing that you can do.

Have you ever read a History book on the Era? There were Industrial intrests and Agricultural interests. Industrial was the North and Agricultural was the South. This shows you are without a clue to the Economic situation at the time, much less the Social.

It never has changed. Conservatives have always supported capitalism and the freedom of every man. Liberals would have you believe that Republicans became slave owners after the Civil War, or that it's wrong for a man to profit from a business. We have always been on the side of right and the liberals have always tried to create slavery ... they still do it today by trying to take away your freedoms, your wealth, and controlling you however they see fit. Liberalism has always been about raising themselves up over others in immoral ways.

Democrats are still racist hate mongers that hate all blacks. See Sheets Byrd, West Virginia Democrat senator and former KKK MEMBER.

The Republican Party is the party of ABRAHAM LINCOLN.
