That's just another name for a Pap test.
Usually a Pap test is done during a pelvic exam, but it can be done at any time.
The medical professional inserts a speculum into the vagina, which helps hold everything open, and gives easier access to the cervix. Using a swab or a little brush, they take tissue samples from several areas of the cervix, and then those are sent off to be examine in a lab.
The smear test (called a smear because they smear the swab or brush on a slide before they look at the results with a microscope) looks for things like disease cells from STDs, and also, more importantly, for abnormal cells that show the development of cancerous or precancerous growths. It is the most effective way of finding pre-cancerous cells in the cervix before they have a chance to further develop into something dangerous.
The test is painless, thought it can be a little uncomfortable at times. However, any negatives are far outweighed by the benefits of having it done.
Good luck if you are having one!

A swab is taken from your cervix. It is receommended that all females over the age of 25 have a smear test every 3 years. These tests pick up pre-cancerous cells in the cervix and if found you can be treated to prevent cancer. If any abnormalities are found you will bne offered more frequent checks as part of your follow up. This may sound scary but only takes 10-minutes. Hopefully your first experience won't be the same as mine where I had 10 med students crammed into the room all trying to get a good look at my cervix!

I'm only 22 and I've had my first smear test last week. The practice nurse takes a swob of cells from your cervix for testing. They apply gel and open your vagina will a small clamp-like object. It's nothing to worry about, embarrassing YES, uncomfortable YES, but only takes a few minutes to do. I suggest going before 25 years if you are sexually active.

Its just when they check that everything is ok - either your nurse/doctor can do one - they don't normally hurt just a bit uncomfy (and a bit embarrassing) x
