I would like to do an active citizenship project with my grade 6/7 class, but I won't be able to start it until April. Does anyone have any ideas for a simple but interesting project that can be completed in three or four weeks? We will be studying child labour, so if it could tie into that topic it would be nice, but it's not absolutely necessary.

Thank you for your help!

I had to do something like this for college, and we let the kids decide on what to do to help the community. This way they are more invested. We ended up making a brochure on child abuse (for students) and gave them to the local schools.
Here are some other projects (they don't have to do with child labor though)

collecting children's books and donating them to needy schools (you would be surprised how many books libraries give away b/c they don't accept all donations)
planting a garden or cleaning a park or other public area
visiting a nursing home and entertaining them
putting together bagged lunches and donating them to a local homeless shelter
putting together care packages, letters, or cards for soldiers overseas
putting together care packages for animals in shelters (food, toys, blanket, etc)

A good way to have the children decide is to break it down for them...do they want to help people, the environment, or animals? When they decide what category to use, you can break it down even further. Having them decide on their own project gives them more responsibility, so they 'own' the project, put more effort into it. You might also want to make a class newspaper, to track the progress, and give them something to keep as a reminder. You could also get the local news involved, especially if everything is done by the kids. Good luck!
