I found this little tidbit in Yahoo! News. I thought I was going to be sick!

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (AP) - A U.S. soldier was sentenced to 100 years in prison Thursday for the gang rape and murder of an Iraqi girl and the killing of her family last year.

"Sgt. Paul Cortez, 24, also was given a dishonourable discharge. He will be eligible for parole in 10 years under the terms of his plea agreement" - BIG WHOOP!
This American soldier was in a position of authority when he took part in a brutal gang rape against an innocent 14 year old girl and then had a hand in murdering this girls family and he's going to be eligible for parole in 10 YEARS??? What the heck is wrong with this countries judicial system!!

100 years in jail is a virtual life sentence. He is eligible for parole in 10 years but that is not a guarantee he will get it. Military sentences tend to be far stricter than civilian courts. Because the parole board is military and not civilian political appointees there is no way to use political contributions to influence the boards decision.

I would guess he will spend at least 30 to 40 years in jail. Real soldiers do not condon that action and will not consider parole lightly.

I am all for defending anyone in our military, but this....he is where is belongs and although he may be "eligible" for parole , I sincerely doubt he would get it ~ His plea agreement may have granted him the "eligibility" but the military courts are quite different than the public courts so to speak ~ I think he will be a lifer.

Just because someone is eligible for parole doesn't mean they have a shot in hell of getting out.

My understanding is that this sentence was passed by a military court. That may go some way to explaining the mind-boggling leniency of the sentence.

You had plenty of warning of the 'sick state of the judicial system' with OJ Simpson's acquittal. And now with the 'Anna Nicole Circus', so what do you expect?

All we can hope is that he gets his real punishment while he's in jail and that someone shows him what it's like to be gang raped. That's true justice
