Yes, it was a sappy movie but it DID have excellent special effects. I really liked the way the scene would fade from the watery "now" to the glorious "then" and the sets for the ship were all magnificent, good costuming. I still cringe when the old bag throws the magnificent jewel into the ocean but, well, what can I say? I'm more practical than that. I would have sold the gem decades ago and lived off the wealth.

There are those that will tell you that the "Star Wars" movies are nothing more than juvenile-related comic book characters brought to life that are only appreciated by those members of our society who have no other source of interest or entertainment in their lives, but I'm not one of them. I see the reason why both were popular.
And "Titanic" is the highest grossing movie for one simple reason: millions of people out there who go to see movies disagree with you.

Sci fi rarely can challenge mainstream genres when breakout hits occur. Plus, you also have to factor in the higher ticket prices now a days compared to back in 1977. The reason you have so many movies breaking records more frequently is the pricing changes in this day and age. As prices increase, more and more of the older movies will start dropping back in the all time box office records.

I agree totally. It's possible if you take into account inflation Star Wars would be right up there. If you include the plethora of toys, books and games with the SW name, I would suspect it would hammer Titantic.
