i have no pedals and my distortion is completely off. it has a three band equalizer on it and i have to turn all of them down and it sounds like crap really.

I'd say you have an electrical current going a little high on you. There's really not much you can do about it except try to tone done the overdrive and decrease the distortion on your amp. If you're using more than 1 effect pedal or have a dual effect with your amp's distortion and a pedal's distortion you should cut off one of them because that might also fix your problem. Otherwise there's not much you can do except try to play away from the amp.

((update)) (after additional info): The factory strings might be a problem but I think at this point you may have too much current going into the power cable for your amp. This is an estimated guess but at this point it really could be a lot of factors, so many that I don't have time to type right now. But you may want to try connecting a power strip from your outlet to your power cable for your amp, that might do it but as I said it could be a lot of things at this point.

Is there a gain level on the amp? If so, turn it down some.
