the good thing about preppy dressing is that alot of it involves basics, so after editing your current wardrobe, you only really need to add a few pieces to realize your new look. first, go through your closet and see what you already have. keep your basic sweaters, jeans, tees, and other items that fit you well, and are in good condtion. after that, it's time to fill in.
this is the fun part: SHOPPING! when shopping, if you don't want to shell out big bucks, it's always better to buy a few things that are well-made and a little more expensive than to buy lots of cheap things that won't last. the specific things you'll need will depend on what you already have, but some key items are oxford shirts, polos, miniskirts, and cords. i suggest going to shops like j.crew, the gap, lacoste, izod, ralph lauren and combing dept stores. if you're low on basic tees, a secret of mine is basic fruit of the loom boy's tees and tanks. they're cheap, last a long time, and are great for layering. also, comb sale racks and especially look at online sales - if you know where and when to look, you can get amazing deals. i would also stick with one basic color palette - it makes for easier mixing and matching.
to me, preppy is sort of like a blank canvas, and the direction in which you can really express yourself is in the accessories. you can do the whole goth prep thing, with skulls and crosses like ralph lauren's rugby line, or you can express your girly side with pearls and cocktail rings. find a shop that has cute cheap jewelry and accessories. the same goes for shoes, although if you want to go in a more traditional preppy route, go for ballet flats or ugg boats and mocassins in the winter and j.crew flip flops in the summer. i'm not sure where you're from, but where i live there's a place called jasmine sola that has exactly what you're looking for - just take the time and look around. as for purses, a sturdy canvas tote is a good start. you can get a printed one, or one with your monogram embroidered on it, or with cute embellishments. oh, and by the way, don't get highlights unless you're really committed to them and have a great colorist. they go so wrong so easily. i have naturally dark hair, and what i do is dye it a slightly darker color, which make the color more vibrant and makes my hair look super shiny and healthy. i get more compliments on it than i ever would with highlights. otherwise, just be yourself! the most important thing to remember is that while a makeover may help kickstart your self-esteem, true happiness comes from within. good luck and good shopping!

okay first off don't become a prep because people say to its not right do it because you want to. second being a prep is a label. Everyone considers me a prep because i am a *****, i have money, and I'm pretty. I also go to private school so that is an automatic label. But being a prep is a way of living, its like you were brought up like that. but that's not a problem you can become a prep if you work hard. first off you need to have nice clothing this means that it must be from stores like american eagle, hollister, banana republic, aeropostal, and stores like that. them you have to work on your attitude. a prep is always well mannered and like suck up with adults. the adults must like you. then you need to work on your classmates. if your hot then hang out with the hot group of people. get into sports but don't become a jock. whatever you do don't go out with someone your hot friend has dated, that's big no no. then go out with someone hot, make sure that person is not going to dump you though bc that can ruin your social status. after that you should be able to get into the preppy crowd. from there you have a lot to learn to keep up with them but don't worry that part is not that hard. at least for me. i wish you good luck. hope the advice helps.

Abercrombie is in, Hollister for their SoCal style, American Eagle is hot, Low lites in hair are hott, dont get the stand out kind of hi lites, they look fake as Paris Hilton's personality. I also recommend getting some kinda class so u wont look like a kinda prep trash or something. Just go and get a Coach tote! And shop at Nordstrom. Plzz dont be like "OMG I LOVE PINK", not all preps like pink. If u just wanna be the mid-class prep and not like rich prep then shop at Aeropostale or AE. If you have the money then I suggest you buy Ralph Lauren POlo not Polo Jean. Theory is also another good clothing brand for preppies if u got the money.

Go to a store like express or a store where you like the styles on the maniquins and ask the sales people to help you put together an outfit that will look good on you but still will be your style. Everyone has their own look that develops over time. Don't be afraid to try new things!

It sounds like you just want to be popular and act like these other people. I really don't suggest trying this, but if you want to so badly, follow these tips;
Browse American Eagle and buy a couple of things that really spark your interest. Laila Rowe is also an amazing jewelry store, it has tons of cute accessories there. If you have thin hair, try getting layers. But not highlights that are too noticable. You'll look like a poser, so just go with a subtle yellowish color. I also like to buy my purses from delias, or Bob's clothing stores. Sometimes shopping at those A&F, AE, and Hollister stores are expensive though, so don't overdo it, and remember to limit your spending amount. $$ E-mail me if you want any other help! < 3
