I am from the U.S. and don't specific requirements for Canada or Europe, but I would guess that they aren't all that different. You first have to meet all the basic requirements set up by the person or group offering the scholarship. Most have an academic element and require a minimum grade point average, but many also consider financial need so that students from economically-disadvantaged families are more apt to get them. Many have other requirements. For example, a particular organization may require applicants to have an affiliation with the organization. That is, they may only give scholarships to the child or grandchild of a member. Scholarships given by colleges require the student to attend that college. Scholarships given by states usually require the student to attend an institution in that state, etc. Scholarships given by business might only go to children of employees or former employees. Other businesses might give scholarships only to students planning on a specific major.
