Dr. Faust was the subject of a late medieval tale of an alchimist and early scientist who was reputed to have sold his soul to the devil in exchange for magical powers and wealth.
The tale originated in Germany and was made into a play first by the English poet Marlowe, then in the 18th century by Goethe. The Goethe play is the most influential piece of literature in modern German.

It is a German play, starring the namesake Faust. The most famous version is Goethe's (pronounced ger-ta, sort of). Rather than give you a whole speil (German for play/speech, get it, hahaha), I will just link you to wikipedia's article. It's good.
