Is it due to some sense of inferiority built into us by a long record of subjugation by foreign powers, whether Moghuls or British?Anything, even a minor adverse comment in a foreign press of TV,balloons into a wild fire of protests in India. Why are we so?Why can't we just treat it as free floating comments?a.prasad.

If one reacts to a criticism which is with some motives of denigration, I feel, it is OK.

The trouble starts only when we react, even when we know, that some of the practices we follow are diplorable. Allowing with pride the stories of Ganesha drinking milk, a snake appearing in a temple, and gossipping about it and vouching for these kind of superstitions as the pride of our religion, is some tthing our young generation should shun. If some body criticizes us for these ills, we actually should thank him. Trust in your faith does not mean following wrong and superstitions.

Indians are people with extreme emotions. The would jump off their feet and celebrate when Sachin hits a ton. And they would cry out if he is out for a duck. It's not relevant with the country or culture.

talking about reactions on adverse comments, you are looking at the wrong picture. These extreme reactions are actions of a bunch of people who actually play dirty games to win over the faith of the crowd. Every common citizen of India just discusses about the comments and forgets it later. They take it casually. That's it. If that had not been the case, India would have turned into a disruptive region and devasted in all terms - development, economy, etc. But the country is still progressing, isn't it? I think you should keep your eyes towards what's happenning around you, rather than what's shown by the media. Just learn from what is shown by the media, that in case there are such bunch of people in your area, gathering up people for a protest - don't join them...

Why Indians, everyone I guess is sensitive. But it is wrong to stereotype this way. (foreign press commenting adverse triggers wild protest in India) Hey, what happened when some Danish TV reported something on Allah and the whole world criticised (thought the 4th World War almost got underway). Every country irrespective of the region or religion went up ridiculously in arms at that time.

By the way, show me one country or a person who welcomes criticism with a kidgloves and Aarti :-)

i think that instead of `sensitive' the proper word should be `touchy'. Sensitivity to criticism is not specific to Indians of India. Many other nations are `sensitive to criticism' of any kind. The explaination : `My country, right or wrong'.Moreover, the word `sensitive has too many connotations, both negative and positive. The word is not rational; it has much to do with feelings and sentiments.Indians are touchy and many feel that their culture as such is inerrent.Yet, sensibilities differ in India because of ts diversity. In that sense Indians are more prone to irritibility, even in terms of intra-ethnic and intra-linguistic provocation from within. Then, Indians are not a homogenous entity. Its a country full of diversity, in terms of caste, religions, ethnicities, linguistic groups, regions and so on.At the same time, at a higher level of discursivity many criticisms are seen in a proper framework. No country or even individuals are above criticisms. But rather than being sensitive and hence provoked, criticism should be understood in rational terms.
If you understand what I said then you should accept that the finer print below the bold question is irrelevent, meaningless.

India has best culture in the world. It was very lenient, compassionate, ready to share it’s philosophy built on experience of several great saint’s God realization for mankind. On the other side the rest of the world was not so advanced to understand this. They knew capturing materialistic world by physical power only. India being looted several time, it was a ‘Herculean’ task to bring it up again and again. People get discouraged and start loosing confidence in its true realized philosophical life style. Even today it is struggling not only for itself but for the whole world’s humanity. The rest of the world has no enough patience to understand its deep philosophical life style which is needed the most today. In such circumstances it is natural to become over sensitive to criticism of any kind, whether it is about their country or culture. We are trying very hard and to our best to save the humanity of this earth so that we can avoid fall back to animal like jungle life where we had started.

Hello friend,

I don't think Indians are 'Over' sensitive. Yes they are sensitive, because they are humans. Even people of other countries are so.

What will you do, when someone just passes a bad comment or jestures about your family members. Just sit and watch?

One has got to be sensitive to issues concerning their country. May be you are referring to the 'over' sensitivity by some political groups that is shown on the media, day in and day out. I dont think this is the real feeling that an average Indian has.

I feel that an average Indian is very subtle, humble, tolerant, emotional and ofcourse sensitive when it hurts him.

After all Indians are also human beings.

Sensitiveness is not related to any country.... It is a natural human feelings all over the world ... some one is more sensitive some one may be less and it also depends on the criticism ... whether it has hurt the faith and feelings of other person. Why one should do such irresponsible criticism at all?. Of course there is also a limit for everything so also the tolerance .. so it is better we respect each others feelings...

I can assure it's not that they're Indians and it would be racist to think so. A lot of people have inferiority complexes and that's probably the main reason for being over sensitive. Anyone around the world for whatever reason can suffer from low self-esteem. One of my favorite philosophies is "Mean people suck!" and "Joke 'em if they can't take a f#@k"
Not everyone you meet in this lifetime will like you and vise versa so don't sweat it. Be w/ those that make you happy and are happy to be w/ you.

Inferiority. No. India is one of the most developed country even in the ancient times. Moral Values,Traditions,Customs and rich Cultural back-ground is Indian's speciality.Forbearance is in their genes. Where-ever Indians go, they overtake natives. It is intolerable to Western countries. Practically, they feel inferior, but they pretend to be superior. So they through comments. Who cares. Gold is always gold in which-ever shape it may be.

Bad comments on anybody be it Indian or any other w.r.t their country and / or culture should never be tolerated. But criticism in good sense may be taken with good spirit for betterment without feeling inferior. Each nation has its own glory. One cannot decide where he / she will take birth. So any good human being must love his / her country without fail.

Let us learn from Earthworm as how they are keeping on improving its own mother soil from birth to death even when they die.
