Without a doubt, the personal computer in all of its manifestations. Access to information, services, and communication have never been easier. Think about it, you can find information on almost every topic a whole lot easier than going to a library card catalog. You can shop on line for almost anything you need. You can communicate through email or I.M. with people from all over the world. The business world, military, and governmental uses are even more important.

Most of the high tech items that have changed our lives over the last 20 years were invented decades ago.( cell phones 1970's, computers1950's, Internet 1980's etc). There has been big improvements in software, but that is not really an invention. It takes a long time from invention to mass marketing. I think the recent invention that will have a biggest impact , is a solar cell that is almost 4 times more efficient, making them much more practical as an energy source.

The single most important invention in modern times was the transistor. Where would the computer and electronics in general be without the transistor?
Most people don't realize that it was invented by three scientists working for AT&T in Bell labs. But even more interesting is the fact that they gave it to the world, not sold it,gave it. Noone has to pay royalties to use the transistor.
How successful and useful was that?

Well, I would say electrical distribution was invented previous to that, otherwise that would be my answer.

I would say radio or wireless. By extension, this includes TV, 2-way radio, wi-fi and cell phones. Prior to 1900 I don't believe radio in any form existed.
