Taste a small amount, if it is bitter or burns, don't eat it. Then eat a small hand full, wait a day, if you aren't sick and don't throw it up, eat some more.

1) Look at what the monkeys eat

2) Take a small bite and wait. If you don't get sick within an hour, take another one - a little bigger this time. If you don't get sick, it is probably safe to eat.

3) Take a survival book with you and look up everything that is safe to eat.
