The "media" tend to be very conservative, and will portray third party people as lunatic fringe no matter what their actual stance. We all know that the "news" is tinted, sometimes with a pretty heavy brush. They will not encourage anybody that the people paying for the advertising object to. So they stick to the moneyed special interests just like the two over-sized parties do.

Because of lack of funding, the 2 big parties control 90% of the political money in this country and the ones that donate(get their money back thru political favors) do not want to risk their investment in a new party that may not get control and therefore , they would not get their political favors granted. For example, it's hard to tell where the NEA (National Education Association) ends and the Democratic party begins, they're both the same thing, that's why our children are being bombarded by Democratic Liberal viewpoints in our schools, I think only the lowest form of life, would sink to such a level, as to brainwash school children, the same way Hitler done it and other dictators thru out history, for they know if they start with the children , that they will have a generation devoted to their cause, the crap they're passing on to our children are things like the Democratic party is like your mother, you feel safe with your mother don't you, then you will can feel safe with the Democratic party. You won't never see this in their homework, the liberals are too smart for this, but just ask your children, what they have heard in school about the Democratic party and see what their response is

Lack of funding is a major reason but another is that third parties are often on the fringe of the electoral spectrum. If they agreed with the Dem and Rep. candidates, who tend to be centrist, they would not need to form a third party. Our political system mandates that winner take all in each state. This means that there is no room for a candidate that garners less than 50% of the vote in most circumstances. People don't want to continue to fund candidates that don't get elected. Also, politicians tend to be realists also. Although many would like to leave their respective parties for a third party, to do so would be political suicide.

Because corporations spend BILLIONS of dollars on supporting republican and democrat candidates. Third party candidates just don't have the money or the backing to advertise or get their message out. And Americans are too stupid lazy to find these things out on their own. Hate to say that about my fellow countrymen, but it's true. Whoever ABC, CBS, Fox, or MSNBC tell them to vote for is who they vote for. Nobody wants to back a loser, and because America has become a two-party system that's the way it will probably stay.

Dem and Rep parties have a great stake in preventing them from having power. If you don't like this check out and then support IRV....Instant Runoff Voting. It would throw the doors open for viable third party candidates.

Money. Questionable priorities. Failure to grasp the mainstream.
Ross Perot did a pretty good job as an independent. The growth could have come from there. What happened?

Dems and Republicans laugh at any third party ~ both Dems and Republicans have POWER and MONEY that the third party cannot come close to....Hence, they lose every time.

Lack of funding, the pressure (legal and illegal) of the "established" parties, and the feeling among the public that the candidates of those parties have no REAL chance to win.

Lack of organization, lack of funding & lack of a broad agenda. Frequently they are personality driven & when that personality leaves, the party colapses.
