Start with a cheap pre-made bookshelf, then add molding. Paint the whole thing with a primer, and then paint. I did this with four bookcases, molding inbetween, at the top and bottom, ended up doing a faux finish, with a couple of different colors of brown tones. It looks like it would cost a couple thousand, but it was really only about $300. It stretches across a whole wall. I added a built-in desk with molding and a beautiful pedistal stand (just used a piece of mdf cut to size and applied the same faux finish as the bookcases). I now have a magnificent library with built-in bookshelves and desk.

I looked at a lot of pictures, and then figured out how to copy the one I liked.

The secret is to start with a cheap premade piece and then embellish it.

The average depth of a bookshelve is 11.5 inches therefor take a 3/4 in piece of sided finished plywood 24 x 36 inches. Cut in half lenth wise , cut 12 inches off each end. leaving you with 2 @ 12x24 ends of the self and 2 @ 12x12 selves . You will also need to have a piece off 24x24 1/8 or 1/4 thick backing board of your choice. And 8 ft of screen model to finish the edges. The material can be plywood ,pine , or any other wood. if you use solid wood that will eliminate the screen mode to finish the edges . Enjoy the project paint or stain at the end . Guessing average cost 20 to 30 dollars at the home center for materials.
