Technically, a VOIP adapter will work with any high speed Internet connection. However, I have found this not always to be the case in Vietnam. Why it doesn't work all the time is a bit of a mystery to me despite my extensive background and knowledge of Internet services.

My wife and I use Skype (http://skype.com) with great success. It's not as fancy as a VOIP phone system, but it works anywhere I've gone in Vietnam. I've even used it successfully through my cell phone's wireless Internet service when I was traveling through the back country of Vietnam. Phone calls to the U.S. through Skype is very cheap (about 2.3 cents/minute) and very high quality. Skype-to-skype calls are free and provides very high quality video.

If you want to be real cool, you can get a Skype phone hooked up to your computer. They even have wireless phones that work just like a regular phone.

Yahoo Messenger is an alternative only that every computer at a Vietnam Internet cafe is already loaded with it. Audio and video is terrible and cut-offs are regular.

Hope this helps, and Happy Tet!
