the film actors are given away the awards like padmasris & padmabhushans ...do they really deserve it?

aren't there many people in other fields too who have excelled equally or more in their professions and the other professions are actually doing more to the socity than the film field?

and talking of the film field...why not the persons working for other departments r being considered for the awards? why just the actors and singers and so on?

wht about the lower end people of the film fraternity?? the technicians etc? those behind the scenes?

are these awards given only to the big and the powerful and the influential alone? tru that they provide entertainmenet to the masses..but they do it at a rate and not for peanuts.

their exhorbant chargng and their lavish styles are happening bcz of the crazy fans.

do they really deserve such an honor?

is there a dearth of persons with similar excellance from other professions who deserve to be honored by such awards?

Not at all. They play a roll given by the Story, and they ACT as directed. What they should be given is for their Acting as it is given in any industry.

National awards (sponsored by Govt.) should be given to people, based on Patriotism or for Social Upliftment. As these awards are given out of People's TAX-money.

Many of Actors (not all!) are not even Good Tax Payers!

Acting is part of an Art... Singing...Dancing...Writing Poems or
Stories...and so on. National Awards can be given to persons excelling in any field who bring fame and name to the Country by their performance. Well... those who give such awards are
judged by the people on seeing the selection of persons...whether they deserve that...But one cannot stop the comments and criticism in such selection. Achievers deserve Awards in any field.

Most awards are given, base on criteria and competence, some are base on popularity also, the people in this particular industry does have an edge and it shows, sport figures are also the same way in my times cricketer were given lot of Indian titles.

This is true all over the world. Where titles are awarded.

If you are talking about things like the Golden Globes and the Oscars, then yes they generally deserve the awards. I think what you are really asking is if they deserve the intense media hoopla and celebrity that goes with it. Then, I would say no. But let's consider this further:

1. The awards are given to the various players in their crafts for excellence. That craft happens to be entertainment. There is nothing inherently wrong with this and they are being recognized by their peers for good work.

2. There are many, many awards given to many people in many careers and walks of life. There are well known ones like the Nobel prize and much smaller ones - say a regional award for a kidergarten teacher. There is also nothing inherently wrong with this and they are being recognized by their peers for good work.

3. Film technicians do indeed get awards. The Academy, of course, awards people for things like sound mixing, editing, and cinematography. They also give out awards for very technical things like inventions and engineering. You just don't hear about them. Also, many crafts have their own guilds and organizations that often have awards ceremonies. This is also true for gazillions of miscellaneous careers and pursuits. Heck, tiny little kid's soccer leagues have awards ceremonies.

So we come to the issue of celebrity. That, I think, is what bothers people. Why the incredible celebration over the Academy Awards and not the Nobel Prize for Physics? It's a good question. One that's on par with more votes being cast each week for Americal Idol than for many, many elections.

It's sad. But, you know, the people are to blame. That's simply the hard truth.

The billion people watching the Academy Awards instead of the Nobel Prize cause this celebrity worship. If everyone wanted to see who would get the Nobel Peace Prize and barely cared about the Best Picture then, guess what, the Nobel Prize would be on ABC with red carpets and stuff. But that's not what people want to see. They want to see entertainers and sport figures. Thus, we have the weirdly distorted world of this worship of celebrities. Indeed, famous people are now famous for simply being famous (I'm looking your way Paris Hilton). It's frightening but it's perpetuated by the fascination with it. I don't understand it either. But it's why celebs who excel at what they do cost a fortune. People want it and they are willing to pay.

I think entertainment has value in our society. It's enjoyable to listen to music, see a movie, a band, a play, read a book even. To discount it completely is a mistake. The problem, I think, is the lopsided distortion that is blurring the lines of reality and common sense. Given a moment of thought, few people would believe that a Golden Globe is more important than an award for the invention of a major medical cure. But everyone still wants to get that autograph. I don't think they even know why sometimes.

My advice, turn off the box. It's awfully cliche to say it but it's true.....if everyone did it, it would go away. Stop to think about it: if TV magically went away tommorrow what would happen to, say, sports? Sports celebs would go away along with the multimillion dollar contracts. The only money to be made mostly would be butts in the seats at the stadims. Sports heroes would be the guys you cheer locally. Think AAA ball. Which, by the way, is a lot of fun to watch and has little of the drama associated with the major leagues. As far as actors, they would be at the local theatre - which there would be much more of perhaps. Gone again would be the million dollar deals and the attention.

Here's a challenge.....how many of the people reading this are going to the PTA meeting instead of watch Desperate Houswives, how many are buying the CD of the local band instead of Cold Play, how many go to the local theatre to see a play instead of the local cineplex to see Norbit, how many follow the news of local politicians instead of People magazine?
